San Francisco to Oceanside |
We left San Francisco Bay on September 7 with
a short day down to Half Moon Bay in moderately rough seas, but had a good
sail none the less. From there we moved to Monterey after a long
rough day's sail.

The
Oakland Bay Bridge leads across Angel Island to downtown San Francisco. |
The
San Francisco skyline makes a dramatic view from the water. |
As
we headed for the Golden Gate we watch the Seattle yacht Cassiopeia fly
her chute along the waterfront. |
Unlike
our arrival, on our departure from the Bay we could see all of the Golden
Gate Bridge! |
We
pass under the bridge on our way out of the Bay. |
The
wind really piped up as we headed out. Straight on the nose too! |
As
we work our way out between the ramparts of the Bay the bridge really
stood out. |
No
pictures of Half Moon Bay in the evening because of heavy fog, but the
morning light illuminated the harbor as we departed for Monterey. |
The
major feature of life in Monterey harbor is sea lions, like these hanging
out on the breakwater. |
There
is a large mooring field at Monterey, with sea lions inhabiting most of
the moorings. |
This
sea lion obviously feels property interest in his buoy. |
Of
course if you want to tie up you can take it up with the management. |
Many
of the boats in the harbor were decorated with garish snow fence...why? |
Well
the reason is obvious when you see the uninvited guests on a boat without
fencing! |
The
sea lion also take over docks, which may be why at least one marina has a
dog loose on the docks! |
Point
Sal, south of Monterey was one of the last things we saw before the fog
closed in for three days. |
Arriving
in San Simeon Bay we were surrounded by thousands upon thousands of birds
on the water and in the air. |
The
heavy fog made the noise of birds wings eerie as they flocked to chase
bait fish in the bay. |
The
birds not only sat on the water, but also flew through the water under the
boat, popping up alongside. |
The
next day offshore we saw birds on the radar ahead and encountered another
swarm offshore, again in the dense fog. |
Point
Conception, the dividing line to Southern California. After
three days the fog lifted some so we could see it. |
Santa
Barbara Channel is filled with oil drilling platforms, like these which
were in a row of seven. |
In
Marina Del Rey the guest docks lie along the end of Burton Chance Park, a
great grassy spot for a dog walk. |

Approaching
Two Harbors at the north end of Catalina Island. Some of the many
moorings are visible close to land. |
